The Mitsubishi XD50U (£2238 inc. VAT) marginally missed out inclusion in last issue's ultraportable group test by virtue of being slightly over the class weight of 1.5kg. However, we found the unit to be portable, with the slim, elongated design of the chassis making it easy to be stored away in the supplied carry case. The lens does protrude from the casing, though, making it prone to accidental damage.
The XD50U has a 1500 ANSI lumens rating and is matched by an equally impressive 1500:1 contrast ratio. Under test, we found the performance of the unit to be excellent, colours being rich and vibrant, especially in DVD playback.
Connections on the back consist of a DVi port, supplied with a digital-to-analogue converter cable, composite video, S-video and audio ports. The built-in 0.5-Watt mono speaker is adequate for presentations and is not hampered by the noise generated by the unit. With a maximum throwrange of 7m, the XD50U is suitable for small- and medium-sized meeting rooms, and we found that it could be used without the need to exclude light.
Users wishing to leave their laptop at home but still present a PowerPoint presentation, can do so because of the addition of a Type I CompactFlash Card slot. Mitsubishi supplies a 16MB card and Type II PC Card adapter for slipping into a laptop to download presentations, initially.
Overall, the Mitsubishi XD50U proved to be a good all-round data projector that is capable of handling still and moving images with ease.
