Fujitsu Siemens has announced details of its entry into the Netbook market with the Amilo Mini UI 3520. The mini-laptop is claimed to weigh less than 1kg and comes with an 8.9-inch display and compact keyboard.
The specification is pretty much what we've come to expect from a Netbook, so you'll find the Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz) processor supported by 1024MB of memory and a choice of 60 or 80GB hard drive. The Amilo Mini has the ability to drop down in to fan less mode by pressing a button. This will under-clock the CPU and integrated GPU for a quieter machine. We'll have to wait and see if it helps prolong battery life.
Fujitsu Siemens won't initially be going down the Linux route, offering on a Windows XP only version at launch. When it comes to other features, this is the first Netbook to offer an ExpressCard slot for connecting peripherals. You'll also find a 1.3-megapixel webcam, VGA-out port, as well as Bluetooth and 802.11g wireless LAN built-in.
The big differentiator for this machine is the line of different coloured lids with which you can decorate the Amilo Mini. If that isn't enough, you can opt for the clear plastic cover with which you can insert your own images of family, friends or rival Netbook designs. It may not be much but in a market that's beginning to feel a little crowded, it could be enough to give this Netbook a higher profile.
Pricing has yet to be confirmed but we're expecting it to be around £300 (inc. VAT) when launched.
