Wacom's Intuos 2 Graphics Tablet (£249 inc. VAT) lets you draw electronically with a digital pen instead of a mouse, giving not only better results but allowing techniques that are otherwise impossible.
Only one cable connection is needed because the device is powered through the USB port. Once installed you can draw with the batteryless pen using a graphics package, or use it like a mouse on the computer's desktop.
Pen input may take some getting used to, but it's soon likely to feel more intuitive than a mouse. One significant benefit is pressure sensitivity, with 1024 levels of pressure detectable and you can use this to vary line width and colour.
Because the Tablet is mapped to the screen one-to-one, the display cursor jumps to the corresponding pen contact point. When combined with the Tablet's peel-off transparent overlay, this allows tracing, a feat impossible with a mouse.
There are programmable mouse buttons on the pen, and programmable functions printed in a strip on the Tablet, such as save, print, copy, paste and pressure adjustment.
Wacom's Intuos 2 Graphics Tablet comes in several sizes, ours having an 8 x 6-inch active area. We found it to be very precise in operation, and a useful tool for the graphics professional.
