If there’s one area of laptop technology that most users will agree falls short of ideal performance, it’s audio output. While processor, hard drive and wireless options have all enjoyed significant performance gains in recent times, the sound available from laptop speakers still has some way to go before it can rival the quality produced from a desktop system.
Bringing things a big step closer is PC audio stalwart Turtle Beach with its Audio Advantage Micro. A self-contained audio component, the Audio Advantage Micro closely resembles a USB flash drive and enables any laptop or desktop PC to deliver high-quality surround sound from compatible audio equipment. Plugging directly into any available USB port, the unit integrates an analogue mini-jack for attaching headphones or analogue speakers to provide virtual surround sound. If used with the optional SPDIF Digital Adapter, the Audio Advantage Micro can even be digitally connected to compatible digital audio equipment for full 5.1 audio output.
Available from the New York based Turtle Beach website, the Audio Advantage Micro retails for $29.95 (£15.94) and has the potential to revolutionise your laptops audio enjoyment. Details on a UK release date are yet to be confirmed.
