Reaching the end of the year in style, Intel has recently announced the release of its latest Pentium 4 chip, the 3.8GHz Pentium 4 570. Having previously planned to release a 4GHz version of the chip, Intel decided last month to scrap its plans of focussing on increased clock speeds, and instead decided to dedicate its efforts into delivering improved performance through the use of auxiliary methods, such as higher levels of Cache.
As a result, this latest 3.8GHz chip may well mark the last of the company’s leaps in clock speed, as it develops its future chips with a broader range of factors in mind. One such release is slated for early 2005, and will deliver this 3.8GHz Pentium 4 570, along with 2MB of Cache; the first processor other than the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition and Intel’s mobile Pentium M range, to offer more than 1MB of Cache.
These new development plans join with Intel’s renaming of its processors, to help the company move forward in a new direction for 2005. Although the release is too late in the year for the new 3.8GHz Pentium 4 570 to be included in many systems in the run up to Christmas, manufacturers will be offering the chip in custom-built systems. Dell in particular has already stated that it will be offering the chip in its high-end systems.
Scheduled for release on the 15th November, the new Pentium 4 marks a turning point for Intel, and 2005 will be an interesting year, as the processor giant takes its technology on a new journey. What Laptop will be watching eagerly, to see what benefits these developments will bring to consumers.
