Mac OS X 10.4, codename Tiger, is set to pounce onto the computing scene. Starting 29 April, Mac owners can upgrade to Apple’s stealthy new OS for £89. It will introduce Spotlight, an in-depth search function to locate files using metadata such as edit history, content, format and size. Dashboard will debut as a host for mini-applications called ‘widgets’, which keep you up-to-date on timely Internet information such as stock prices, weather reports and flight times. The widgets pop up on your screen with the push of a function key, and then disappear again. Another addition is Automator, which lets users automate repetitive tasks without complex programming. Safari, iChat AV and QuickTime have also been updated.
With a ‘rock-solid’ UNIX foundation and native 64-bit application support, Tiger has Apple’s trademark intuitive user interface and integration between applications.
“Mac OS X Tiger is the most innovative and secure desktop operating system ever created,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. We’ll soon find out for ourselves.
