The Lap Up 700 Portable (£57 inc. VAT) is a laptop stand that allows the user to view the screen directly, rather than having to angle the screen and look down onto it. Depending upon the amount of time you sit in front of your computer, such a stand – with the addition of an external keyboard – may reduce the risk of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) that computer users are prone to. By raising the base of the laptop to a more convenient height, the risk of neck strain is reduced.
The simple stand consists of three Perspex slats hinged together to create a raised platform. Pegs on the front board support the weight of your laptop. It’s not the most appealing stand we’ve seen, but it’s more than capable of holding a standard 15-inch laptop comfortably in place.
For some, a stand may appear to be a step backwards, as it clutters the desk – the very reason why many buyers bought a laptop in the first instance. While the packaging suggests that it can be packed up and carried as part of your mobile kit, this really isn’t practical, as users will not take their external keyboard on the move with them. Also, while the hinges of the stand are sufficient for supporting the weight, they do not appear strong enough for constant and continual opening and closing.
