Following the worldwide success of the modern-day icon that is the Apple iPod, the technology world has been counting the minutes until everyone grabbed for a piece of the pie. With downloading of MP3’s increasing all the time, along with the recent embrace from major record labels, the days of the Walkman are truly over.
As legions of iPod clones already saturate the market, computer mainstay Dell has now geared up for another foray into the digital music revolution, with the upcoming release of its Pocket DJ5 and DJ20 digital media players. Aimed as direct competitors to the Apple iPod and iPod Mini, the units pack 5GB and 20GB of storage space respectively. Roughly enough for between 1000 and 5000 MP3’s, listeners can now carry more than 300 hours of music; a big step from the storage space currently offered by disk based media such as Minidisc.
Facts are fairly thin on the ground at the moment, but what is known is that both Dell units will support Microsoft’s new Media Player 10, and its Play For Sure initiative, whereby songs downloaded from online services are guaranteed to run on systems bearing the Play For Sure logo. At present, a UK release date has not been specified, but the DJ5 and DJ20 will see a November release in the US, and will retail for roughly $199 for the DJ5 and $249 for the DJ20.
