In a new move to further competition against close rival, Research In Motion (RIM), and its BlackBerry technology, PalmOne has recently announced a deal with software giants Microsoft, which could take it a huge step further in its fight. Providing a license for PalmOne to use Microsoft’s ActiveSync software, the deal claims to allow travelling PalmOne business users to gain secure access to sensitive corporate email, while on the road.
PalmOne has already confirmed that it will be using the Microsoft technology in future versions of its Treo Smartphones, and claims that the move will allow Microsoft’s Exchange Server ActiceSync technology to eradicate the need for the installation of extra servers, in order to get secure email to its mobile devices.
As if that wasn’t reason enough to get excited, PalmOne is even predicting that such a reduction in extraneous servers, will allow it to cut costs and provide secure wireless email at a far lower price than has previously been seen.
This deal will surely increase the ongoing rivalry between PalmOne and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry device, so only time will tell how RIM will choose to respond.
