Following Toshiba’s June announcement of the latest high-powered additions to its multimedia Qosmio range, the top-of-the-range Qosmio G50 is now available and may prove to be one of the most powerful multimedia laptops we’ve seen so far.
Powered by Intel’s Centrino 2 technology, the G50 ships with an impressive 4GB of memory as standard and can be configured with up to 8GB of memory for high-performance use. Twin 320GB hard drives are fitted side-by-side for comprehensive storage capacity and the tri-format dual-layer DVD rewriter supports all current CD and DVD formats. At present there is no option to add a Blu-ray drive.
The 18.4-inch screen is designed for full high-definition (HD) playback and carries an HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. High-powered 3D performance is provided by an nVidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, for gaming and multimedia editing tasks. A built-in Toshiba Quad Core HD processor also provides the ability to upscale standard definition DVDs and videos to emulate the stunning clarity of current high-definition content.
The most unique feature however is the G50’s Gesture Control functionality. The built-in webcam automatically detects your hand movements, and interprets them in real-time to allow you to control multimedia playback with a literal wave of your hand.
Available now, the Qosmio G50 starts at £1099 (inc. VAT). How powerful it proves to be and how well the Gesture Control works in practice is something we’re very keen to test, so stay tuned a full review later this week.
