We needed guidance to make the most of this program, as the music lessons of our childhood are but a faded memory. GuitarRef Elite's online help came to our rescue. Software developers PDA Initiative specialise in educational applications, and it shows in their thoughtful design. For every note, the Chord Plotter offers 36 different chord types with six variations. In standard tuning, you have 2,592 chords at your fingertips. The alternate tunings and the dynamic chord generator provide up to 21,600 chords. That's a copious amount, considering most rock songs only use three. The Favourites section organises chords, scales and modes for easy reference.
In Chord Discoverer mode, users create chords by clicking on the neck of the guitar. GuitarRef Elite then determines what they're called. This feature is still in beta form, but we had a lot of fun creating strange chords to boggle the finest jazz minds. Finally, you can compose progressions for songwriting or practicing. Playback tempo and strumming patterns are programmable. Pocket GuitarRef Elite is a worthwhile investment for guitar enthusiasts. PDA Initiative told us they're planning an upgrade soon, with a tuner and sound effects.
