Reminding us that Operating Systems aren’t all about Windows and Mac OS, digital media specialist iRiver has gone the computer geek route, and developed its latest portable multimedia players (PMP’s) entirely around Linux. With the OS taking up less space, and sourcing far less power than its peers, this choice aims to provide users with a quicker, more productive system, along with a much longer battery life.
As their names suggest, the PMP-120 and PMP-140 pack 20GB and 40GB hard drives respectively, and provide playback for a wide range of media formats, including MP3, MPEG, AVI, WAV, WMA and ASF, video and audio. Displayed via a 3.5-inch LCD screen, both models are capable of producing 260,000 colours and include a TV-out, for connecting to external displays. This degree of flexibility is a great benefit for the pair, since they also provide facilities for viewing photographs, either as single shots or in the form of customized slideshows. Finally, for business users or anyone that just likes the sound of their own voice, both units also include voice recording capabilities, as well as an FM radio.
At a nicely portable size of 139 x 84 x 32mm, both the PMP-120 and 140 weigh a slimline 299g, ensuring their comfort and portability. The pair are available now, and have a recommended retail price of £400 (inc. VAT) for the PMP-120, and £450 (inc. VAT) for the PMP-140.
