At a central London, riverside location, Toshiba recently unveiled its newest range of laptops; all scheduled to hit the market this quarter. Alongside new additions to its acclaimed Qosmio range, two new series of laptops will be released, together with a brand new, multimedia centre docking solution; which aims to bring the latest in digital media technology to existing laptop users.
After the strong move towards portable digital-media convergence, recently demonstrated by the Qosmio E10, Toshiba is now set to take the idea a step further, with the release of the Qosmio F10 and G10. Based around the same concept as the E10, the new duo offer a similar 4-in-1 experience, with the G10 now adding a 17-inch TruBrite screen, to the 15-inch TFT offered by its predecessor. No less well equipped, the F10 represents the smaller brother of the pair, and still manages to deliver a 15-inch TruBrite screen.
Dual 80GB hard-drives combine to give the G10 160GB of storage space – upgradeable to dual 100GB drives – and the F10 proves no slouch as well, with a single 80GB drive still proving ample for less consuming needs. Ideal for today’s ever-increasing multimedia options, both systems retain the TV tuner and Linux based Qosmio player of the E10, to provide a complete home entertainment centre.
Marking new additions to its stable are the Toshiba Satellite P30 and M30X series. Designed as a desktop replacement system, the P30 comes packed with high-end features, to provide a powerful multimedia workstation, while the M30X is aimed more towards family use, with an equally impressive list of specs.
With a 17-inch widescreen display, the P30 series delivers its graphics courtesy of an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 external adapter, and audio comes via virtual surround sound, thanks to SRS Trusurround XT technology. Powered by a Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor, the P30 even comes with 1GB of DDR RAM as standard, expandable to 2048MB. Available in metallic red and silver, the P30 packs 100GB of storage space, and also brings compatibility for DVD-, + and RAM.
For a more portable system, the M30X contains the same audio/visual capabilities as the P30, albeit displayed via a 15.4-inch screen. With four USB 2.0 ports, and full 802.11g Wi-Fi support, the series will aim to deliver a lesser degree of power, with a far greater level of portability.
Finally, Toshiba also previewed its modular entertainment system, which sets out to bring the benefits of modern digital media to older laptops, as much as the latest systems. Built around an audio/USB hub, known as the ‘base-station’, the modular system connects to existing laptops via a single USB connection. Expandable to a total of four units, the complete system encapsulates the hub itself, a digital and analogue TV/Radio tuner, a Wi-Fi home hotspot, and the 200GB Toshiba GigaStore mass storage unit.
With the base-station providing the heart of the system, users can add on as many or as few of the other three components as they wish, with all four connecting via a proprietary USB connection and stacking in much the same way as a traditional Hi-Fi system.
Available as of Tuesday 12th October, the Qosmio G10 and F10 will retail for approximately £1531/£1799 and £1361/£1599 (ex/inc. VAT) respectively; the Satellite P30 and M30X series for approximately £1105/£1299 and £808/£949 (ex/inc. VAT); and the Audio/USB base-station for £67/£79 (ex/inc. VAT), including USB cable and infrared remote control. Watch this space for more information and all the latest reviews of this exciting new Toshiba technology.
