The latest research from DisplaySearch* is that the popularity of the 15.4-inch widescreen display is continuing to be the fastest growing panel size, closing the gap between the 15-inch panel size, which is currently the most popular format. It seems that consumers, and corporate users, can’t get enough of the widescreen format and its larger viewing area.
Whether as a response to this, or merely a reaction to, NEC computers has introduced its first laptop to sport a widescreen display in the form of the i-Select M4610 (£821 inc. VAT).
Comprising an Intel Pentium M 715, running at 1.5GHz, and supported by 256MB DDR SDRAM, 40GB hard drive and a combination DVD/CD-RW optical drive. Windows XP Home Edition is supplied as standard on this model.
Corporate users can opt for Windows XP Professional Edition on the slightly higher specified £938 (inc. VAT) version of the M4610, which shares the same chassis but comes with an Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6GHz), 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60GB hard drive and DVD±RW optical drive. ATi Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics are supplied as standard across the range.

It is expected that 25 percent of laptops sold in the third-quarter of this year will have the wider display type. The 15-inch screen remains the most popular choice for consumer and corporate models, with over 5 million units sold per quarter worldwide.
