Laptops continue their steady move to IT domination, especially if the latest figures from UK-based analyst firm Context are to be believed. Context monitors the sale of laptops through the reseller channel – so effectively all over the counter sales, as opposed to the Direct Model run by Dell, for example. This means we get to see a more consumer-based reflection of the market, as these tend to be bought in ones and twos rather than on mass.
In January, laptop sales accounted for 49.2 percent of computer shipments sold via resellers in Europe. This is up from 42.5 percent year-on-year. Analyst trends put the growth of the laptop market as high as 17 percent for 2005, which would firmly place the laptop has the dominant computer over it’s deskbound counterpart.
In the UK, the market saw a growth of seven percent for January. However, this is traditionally seen as the low point of the year, as the post-Christmas lull starts to bite.
