Averatec has been in operation in the United States since 2002 but will be a new name to buyers in the UK. The company has introduced three models that place price and performance on an equal footing. Rather than selling directly, the company will be offering its laptops through resellers, such as PC World.
The laptops currently available are the 6200, 3300 and the 3200 series. All three come in slim line magnesium-alloy casing and all weigh in at a mere 2kg. The Averatec 6200 (£795 inc. VAT) is fitted with a 15.4-inch TFT panel that offers a resolution of 1290 x 800 pixels. Powered by an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ processor and supported by 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60GB hard drive and multi-format DVD rewriter. In addition, the 6200 series comes as an instant DVD player. DVDs can be watched at the click of a button without having to power the laptop.
Those on a strict budget can opt for the Avertec 3200 series, with prices starting at £695 (inc. VAT). Powered by the AMD Sempron 2600+ processor and supported by 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60GB hard drive and DVD/CD-RW combination drive. 802.11g is standard across the range, as is Windows XP Home Edition.
