EPSON EMP-TW10

The EMP-TW10 (£999 inc. VAT) is a large, but stylish, home entertainment LCD projector that looks a great deal bulkier than its3.6kg suggests. However, Epson has added handles into the design of the base, making it an easy to carry and attractive unit. Connections on the rear of the unit consist of audio, S-video, component ports and the standard analogue link, which makes it ideal for connecting to a standard DVD player as well as surround sound speakers for a full theatre experience.

With a maximum throw-range of 7.6metres, the TW10 is ideally suited for average living rooms, with the lens including large focus and zoom for pitching the perfect image. In use, we found the projector’s image quality was excellent with an extremely wide scope of colour. It has long been considered that the maximum amount of lamp power a home entertainment unit requires is 1000 ANSI lumens, as is the case with the EMP-TW10.

This ceiling on the brightness of the lamp is due to how living rooms differ from offices, in that natural light can be excluded a great deal easier and any artificial light is often less harsh in the home. Therefore, when it comes to rating the efficiency of a home entertainment projector, it’s often the usability of the contrast ratio that plays a greater role. Based around 0.6-inch LCD display technology, the TW10 proved to be relatively loud in use, but this did not hinder the enjoyment of movies. The projector also has a 700:1 contrast ratio, which is standard for an LCD system.

Overall, the Epson EMP-TW10 is a good example of what can be achieved when not limited by shape or size. While it will look and act out of place in an office environment, for watching DVDs in the home we found it a pleasure to use.
