USB KEYS ON TEST

As high capacity data storage gets smaller and cheaper, we take a look at six great portable options

KINGSTON DATA TRAVELLER ELITE (1 GB)
Carrying the second most storage space, the Kingston is also the biggest model in the test. With a smart, silver design, a nice touch is the option to add your name or logo as an embossed signature. Finger grips line the sides of the drive, allowing for easy removal from USB ports. With the included software, password security can also be set, adding safety missing from the lack of a write protect switch. Quick speed and ample storage make the Kingston a smart choice.

BUFFALO USB 2.0 ( 512 MB )
The only key in the test to be made of transparent plastic, the Buffalo looks very stylish and allows a good look at its machinations. However, a slightly loose cap means the unit rattles somewhat in transit, which could lead to damage in the long run. A write protect switch is in place to protect against accidental erasures, but the switch itself is so far recessed, that proves extremely difficult to operate. With no extra software coming bundled with the drive, the only extra is a fairly short extension cable, which would still be adequate for laptop use. Working more than capably, these shortcomings, unfortunately, act against the Buffalo, and ensure that it falls slightly behind its competitors in this test.

RATING 5
PRICE £60/£70 (EX/INC. VAT)
CAPACITY 512MB
FEATURES Extension USB Cable (50cm), Write Protect Switch
DIMENSIONS 70 x 16 x 9 mm

SWISSMEMORY TWISTPRO (2 GB)
Holding a massive 2GB, the TwistPro has the most storage space in the test. Slickly designed, its ultra-modern appearance is helped problem, since the connectors are only protected from above – this may well lead to dust intrusion. The twist mechanism is itself also open to wear, and this could shorten its lifespan. Although great looking and adaptable, these factors remain a big consideration.

RATING 7
PRICE £134/£158 (EX/INC. VAT)
CAPACITY 2GB
FEATURES SecureLock Software, Bootable, Carry Clip
DIMENSIONS 70 x 29 x 14 mm
WEIGHT 15g
