IDC has announced details of laptop sales for 2004, with a startling increase in the number of units sold. With laptop sales across the board rising some 35 percent, 2004 for a strong year for the laptop. Once again, it was aggressive pricing rather than innovation and technology that was the main driver of sales.
It is interesting to note, while Acer is the leading seller of laptops in the European market, Dell still remains the number one choice worldwide. Acer’s shipments to Europe reached 2.7 million in 2004, which constituted 70 percent growth in total European sales. HP placed second, both in European and worldwide sales, but with an increased turnover of some 12.1 percent.
