TOSHIBA TLP-S10

Toshiba is quickly establishing itself as one of the leading data projector suppliers in the UK, with a range that manages to suit business users looking for ultraportable or office-based devices. The Toshiba TLP-S10 (£699 ex. VAT) is aimed at the small business buyer looking for a compact unit for use in the office. The LCD technology projector has a 1200 ANSI lumens lamp, which offers satisfactory output. We found, for the best results we had to exclude quite a lot of natural light.

Combined with a contrast ratio of 400:1, the device did not offer the full array of test colours, with subtle shades being washed out in favour of a uniform tone to images. During our DVD test, colours once again appeared washed out, but there was a minimum of colour breakdown.

The unit has a native resolution of 800 x 600pixels. This may be satisfactory for users with older laptops, but as the latest projectors come with a default setting of 1024 x 768pixels, the projector needs to upscale the image in order to accommodate a laptop. Connectivity on the rear of the unit is in keeping with similarly specified projectors and consists of two component ports for linking to a laptop and an external monitor, S-video, video and audio ports.

The design of the S10 is such that it doesn’t include a manual zoom lens. Instead, this is dealt with digitally, with the user increasing or decreasing the size of the image via two buttons on the top of the unit. In this way, the projector can be used in small to medium sized meeting rooms without needing to worry about where the unit will be placed. That said, we found that Toshiba’s claim of a maximum throw-range of 11.9 metres was a little optimistic, as the quality of our test images deteriorated at the 10 metre mark. The Toshiba TLP-S10 is a satisfactory data projector that will suit offices looking for a lightweight machine to use in partnership with an older laptop. However, for users with a modern laptop, there are more suitable units on the market.
