The InFocus LP120 (£2015 inc. VAT), is currently the world's smallest data projector. Weighing 0.9kg and measuring 248 x 52 x 94mm, it will certainly be more compact than most of the laptops it will be carried along with. The small size does not compromise on quality, though. The 1100 ANSI lumens unit has an impressive 2000:1 contrast ratio. It manages to achieve this slight size through the use of the latest 0.7-micron DLP technology from Texas Instruments, which allows for a smaller die package with improved performance. In use, we found the LP120 to give above-average image quality, especially when running multimedia and DVD movies that, while dark compared with images on the laptop screen, had a greater degree of depth and colour.
Connections are kept to a minimum, with DVi or S-video ports for connecting to source machines and an audio-in socket for the 0.5-Watt speaker. The connections are located at the same end as the lens unit, adding a degree of stability to the machine that would otherwise be easily moved.
Such a size can be a hindrance, particularly in the size of the image that can be thrown. With a maximum throw-range of 5m, the LP120 is ideal for smaller meeting rooms but is unlikely to make the right impression in larger rooms. Our review unit was a test sample and not a final production model. While there were evident flaws, they did not overshadow what was an easy-to-set-up and use data projector that offers the mobile professional a greater degree of mobility.
