In the same month as PalmOne’s new Tungsten T5 hit shelves worldwide, the company has recently announced the release of a firmware update, to fix a few problems that have already managed to show their faces. All new models of the handheld will now be manufactured with the firmware update installed at source, but for all early adopters, this update must be downloaded, if these preliminary bugs are to be ironed out.
Spotted in early models of the T5, one of the main problems that the firmware update aims to solve is a flaw within the unit’s Calendar application, which can cause the system to crash due to system instability during use. To ascertain whether or not you need to install the update, you’ll need to fire up your T5 and launch the Memos application. Create a new memo, and then write the Graffiti Short Cut stroke, followed by a full stop and the number 9. A date will now appear, and if the date is before Sat 10/16/2004 2:45p, then you’ll need to grab the update. If the date is anytime after, then your T5 is fine.
Available as a 15.1MB download from the PalmOne website, the update will take up 16.7MB of space on your T5, and will also delete all data currently on the system, restoring it to an ‘as new’ state. Therefore, make absolutely certain that you have backed up all of your files before putting the new firmware in place, and then hopefully you can rest easy that your new toy won’t cause you anymore undue headaches.
