As SMS texts fly around the world, and mobile phone companies get richer and richer, it was inevitable the technology would expand, and SMS texting would become even more accessible to consumers.
Launched by mobile phone giants Vodafone, the Vodafone Text Centre is a new software solution that allows users to send SMS text messages direct from their laptops or PC’s. Available as a free download from the Vodafone website, the software is easily installed, and proceeds to add an inbox menu to both Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes applications.
Once in place, users can then compose and send SMS text messages in exactly the same way as they would a standard email. Providing an option to send to single or multiple recipients, the sender is even able to specify whether they would like to receive their replies via email or straight to their mobile phone.
Free to download and install the software, texts are subsequently charged at a rate of 14p per text, which is charged directly to users monthly Vodafone bill. However, therein lays the catch. Only existing Vodafone subscribers can currently utilise the software at present.
With such an obvious idea sure to make a huge splash though, it’ll only be a short time before the other manufacturers all take note. In no time, texting will be even easier and more addictive than it already is, and we can all give our thumbs a well-earned rest.
