As convenient as mobile computing is for workers on the move, the delicate nature of such expensive technology has remained a limitation in more demanding environments. When rain and wind strike, laptop users nationwide can be seen running for cover – not the best solution for outdoor trades. Enter the Mitac M220.
Powered by an Intel Low-Voltage Pentium M 738 processor with a 1.4GHz clock-speed, the M220 is able to keep power consumption low. Hard drive capacities can reach as much as 80GB, and 40-bit eNOVA encryption is employed to keep files secure in the event of a system loss or theft. Wireless capabilities are provided by 802.11b Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and GSM/GPRS – all essential requirements for the mobile worker.
As one of the first ruggedised laptops to offer a 15-inch screen, the M220 is also one of the first to meet European IP54 environmental specifications. Offering protection from high-powered sprays of dust and water, the M220 can also withstand repeated falls from heights as much as three feet onto the hardest surfaces.
With a touch-screen and a claimed battery life of more than four hours, the Mitac M220 looks set to add another strong system to the ruggedised laptop market. Available now, with a four-week delivery, the M220 retails for a RRP of £2495. All that remains is to find a bit of rain and dirt to test it out but lets face it, this is the UK after all.
