SanDisk unveiled a groundbreaking 8GB CompactFlash storage card at the Photokina trade show in Germany this week. The SanDisk Ultra II CF card has four times the capacity of anything currently on the market. The price is earthshaking as well, at around £754 (inc. VAT), with the product being aimed at the professional photography market rather than consumers.
Other formats in the Ultra II range have not been left out of the storage revolution, with a 4GB Memory Stick Pro (£802 inc. VAT) and a more affordable 2GB SD card (£194 inc. VAT) also on offer. The cards are capable of writing data at a speed of 9MB per second and reading it at 10MB per second. Removable storage solutions have been dropping in price steadily so we shouldn’t have to wait too long before high capacity cards are within reach of consumers.
The cards will available starting November at major electronics stores and online from the manufacturer. SanDisk, based in California, is the world’s largest supplier of flash memory cards.
