GPS is moving away from being an aspirational product to being a “must have” on your mobile device. These are the claims of Navicore, a GPS company making their presence known in the European market. Navicore Personal (£200 inc. VAT) has been designed specifically for Symbian devices using a unique algorithm to speed up data between the receiver and the handset.
Shipped as a 256MB memory card and SIRFIII certified Bluetooth receiver, the application and maps take up 128MB of the card, leaving an equal portion for users to store media and extra files on. The software works by populating the device as soon as you insert the card. Once you take the card out, any evidence of the application is removed. In this way, the license is for the card and not tied to the device.
The mapping software is supplied by Tele Atlas and will be refreshed once a year. A spokesman for the company informed WL that traffic updates via GPRS are not currently supported but will be introduced in Q3. Owners of Bluetooth GPS receivers can opt for the memory card option (£100 inc. VAT).
