Gateway’s re-entry into the UK market has been rather downplayed, but this looks set to change with a host of releases from the American-based company. Aimed at the desktop alternative market, the Gateway MX8554 is based around a 17.1-inch widescreen (WXGA) Super-TFT, referred to by Gateway as an Ultrabright technology display.
Supported by ATi Radeon Mobility X700 graphics with 64MB of dedicated memory, it’s quick enough for mainstream gaming. The remainder of the specification consist of an Intel Pentium M 750 (1.86GHz), 1024MB DDR2 memory and a 100GB hard drive. Extras include dual-layer DVD rewriter and Microsoft Works 8.0. Gateway has yet to setup a direct sales service, relying on Comet and Staples to sell its machines. Pricing for the MX8554 is £899 (inc. VAT).
