Following the success of the Axim X30 series, Dell is introducing another contender to the wireless PDA arena - the Axim X50 directed at professional power users. It comes equipped with the latest Intel XScale processor and Windows Media Player 10.
Three models are available with processor speeds of up to 624MHz. They run the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating system, allowing for higher screen resolutions and switching between landscape and portrait modes. With Windows Media Player 10, users can download songs and movies directly from Microsoft’s online stores. Users of the affordable Axim X30 range will be able to upgrade to Windows Media Player 10 by the end of the year at http://support.dell.com.
The 416MHz (£229 inc. VAT) and 520MHz (£249 inc. VAT) models are fitted with a standard 3.5-inch display, whereas the flagship 624MHz Axim X50v (£289 inc. VAT) has a 3.7-inch display with a VGA resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. The Intel 2700G graphics chip boosts video playback and 3D gaming in the Axim X50v.
Dual wireless in the form of Bluetooth and 802.11b Wi-Fi is integrated into the top two models, while the 416MHz unit has Bluetooth only. Dell has left plenty of room for expansion with both SD and CompactFlash slots on the entire range. Memory consists of 64MB RAM for all the devices, with 128MB Flash ROM (91MB user accessible) in the 520MHz and 624MHz models.
Dell has shaken up the PDA world by releasing handhelds incorporating the latest technology at competitive prices, keeping major players like the HP iPAQ on their toes. The Axim X50 series will go on sale 9 November on the Dell website.
